Infectious Diseases

The Infectious Diseases Division at Stamford Hospital is comprised of four board-certified physicians who provide clinical care and consultative services to other physicians, the hospital and the community. The division also provides teaching and educational services. All members are faculty of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The division is responsible for oversight of appropriate antibiotic use in the hospital, infection control (prevention of hospital-acquired infections), quality assurance in maintaining sterility and appropriate isolation policies, the development of practice guidelines for a variety of infectious diseases, oversight of the microbiology laboratory, and supervision of many aspects of employee health.

Stamford Hospital's Infectious Diseases Division has an active research program and its physicians participate in a large number of clinical trials and microbiology laboratory studies. Particular areas of expertise include HIV/AIDS, influenza vaccination and management, antibiotic use and resistance, preparedness planning for biological emergencies (pandemic influenza and bioterrorism), travel medicine, Lyme and other arthropod-borne diseases, infections in critical care and cancer patients, hospital-acquired infections and hospital epidemiology.

For the past seven years, in conjunction with the City of Stamford's Health & Social Services Department, Stamford Hospital has conducted a "Fight the Flu" campaign. The campaign typically begins in late October and runs through the end of November. In 2005, we distributed close to 18,000 flu shots to residents of the Stamford area.

We will again offer the flu shots in 2006. Please note that particulars about the campaign will be posted on our website at the end of September.
