| STAMFORD, CT - October 16, 2009 Stamford Hospital will hold a full-day educational workshop at the Tully Health Center on Nov. 14 called "Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Living an Empowered Life." The fifth annual event will feature lectures from area physicians and experts as well as an exhibit of the latest medical aids for people with chronic lung disease.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, more than 12 million Americans are currently diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and an additional 12 million likely have the disease and do not even know it. The fourth leading cause of death in the U.S., COPD kills more than 120,000 Americans each year.
COPD encompasses a group of lung diseases associated with airflow obstruction; emphysema and chronic bronchitis are its two main conditions. Most COPD is caused by long-term smoking, but can also be caused by exposure to air pollution, second-hand smoke, occupational dusts and chemicals, heredity and a history of childhood respiratory infections.
During the workshop, Dr. Paul Sachs, Stamford Hospital's director of pulmonary medicine and rehabilitation, will provide an overview of chronic lung disease. The seminar will include other presentations on topics ranging from the genetics of COPD to what COPD patients should know to protect themselves from the flu. Additionally, attendees can view a variety of medical aids and medications in the Exhibit Hall.
The workshop schedule includes: • 10 a.m. - Registration, Exhibit Hall, and refreshments. • 10:20 a.m. - "Opening Remarks" by Dr. Sachs. • 10:30 a.m. - "The Flu and You. What Patients With COPD Need to Know" by Dr. Lester Krasnogor, Stamford Hospital's Associate Director of Pulmonary Laboratory. • 11 a.m. - "Is COPD Hereditary?
