New surgical interventions, available at only a few heart centers nationwide, help enhance the recovery process and improve quality of life for Stamford Hospital heart patients. The Heart and Vascular Institute's cardiac surgeons combine time-tested expertise and innovative treatment strategies to provide an unparalleled level of compassionate care.
The hospital offers both traditional and beating heart, or "off-pump," coronary bypass surgery to treat coronary artery disease. The off-pump method eliminates the need to stop the heart, reducing complications and allowing patients to go home within a few days. Contributing greatly to enhanced recovery is endoscopic vein removal, where surgeons extract healthy veins through very small incisions for reuse as new heart vessels in bypass surgery.

Valve repair and replacement is another vital part of our cardiac surgery program. Stamford Hospital's Heart and Vascular Institute surgeons use prosthetic tissue heart valves, as well as new stentless prosthetic aortic valves, to replace damaged or diseased valves. Repair procedures range from simple angioplasty to complex reconstructive processes.
Other innovative surgical procedures in our program include thoracic and thoraco-abdominal aneurysm repair, ventricular remodeling for treatment of heart failure, and, for people who suffer from severe sweating, less invasive thoraco-scopic sympathectomy surgery.
